Early life

Donald McNichol Sutherland was born on 17 July 1935 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. Donald has English, German and Scotish ancestry. His parents are Dorothy Isobel and Frederick McLea Sutherland. They ran local gas and bus company. When he was a child, he suffers from polio, acute rheumatic fever, and hepatitis.

Donald attended the Bridgewater Junior-Senior High School and later attended Victoria College, University of Toronto, where he earned a double degree in drama and engineering. In 1957 he went to the Britain to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Personal life

Donald was married three times. His first wife was Lois Hardwick (1959–1966). The second time he gets married to Canadian actress and activist Shirley Douglas, with who he has twins: famous actor Kiefer and Rachel Sutherland. They divorced in 1970.

His third and present wife is a French-Canadian actress Francine Racette, with who he has three sons: Rossif, Angus, and Roeg.

Acting  Career

Donald began his acting career in Scotish Teather Perth Repertory. During the 60s, he gains small roles and filmed first horror movie Castle of the Living Dead ( 1964 ). The following years he has supporting roles in another horror such as Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors, The Bedford Incident and Die! Die! My Darling! He also appeared in tv series Gideon’s Way and The Saint.

His breakout was the role in the war film The Dirty Dozen ( 1968 ), after wich he went to the Hollywood. There, he gained first lead role in black comedy war movie MASH, where he played Captain Benjamin Franklin “Hawkeye”. In the same year, he also took the role in Kelly’s Heroes.

In 1971 Donald co-staring with Jane Fonda in crime thriller Klute, which was nominated for Best Writing, Story, and Screenplay. The 70s was fruitful for Donald’s career as he filmed numerous films such as Don’t Look Now, Federico Fellini’s Casanova,  End of the Game,  Invasion of the Body Snatchers and so on.

Donald has major role and influence in launching very popular Canadian docudrama Witness to Yesterday ( 1974 – 1976 ), where he portrayed physician and medical innovator Norman Bethune. For the role in the sci-fi Treshold, Donald won 4th annual Genie Awards for Best Actor.

During the 80s and 90s, he played with Susan Sarandon and Marlon Brandon in the historical drama A Dry White Season. Then he played with Silvester Stalone in the prison action Lock Up. In 1990 hi co-starring with Robert De Niro and Kurt Rassel in drama Backdraft.

In 1995 he played in Citizen X, which brings him Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor and GGA for the Best Supporting Actor.

In 2001 Donal gained a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame. He also has the star on the Canada’s Walk of Fame.
