Early years

She was born in Deerfeld, Michigan in November 21, 1937 in a mixed Italian and Lebanese family.
She grew up surrounded by entartaining business and was encouraged to be an actress from her early childhood.

She went to Marymount High in Los Angeles and graduated at University of Southern California as a teacher.

She studied drama at Herbert Berghof  Studio for proffessional theater artists  in Greenwich Village, New York City.

Career development

She started acting in TV series „The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis“, „Zane Grey Theater“ and more. In 1961. she appeared in „The Joey Bishop Show“, „Bonanza“, „Ben Casey“ and „The Donna Reed Show“.  She became an instant star with a role in „That Girl“, which aired for five years .

In 1967. she has won a Golden Globe award for her role in that series.

She wanted to improve her acting  so she started to attend the „Actors Studio“ and learn from  the famous Lee Strasberg, a drama teacher who had a huge impact on many Hollywood actors.

„Free to Be…You and Me“ in 1974. was here next TV show and it  brought her the first Emmy award.

In 1974 she had a debut in Broadway in the play called „Thieves“ and produced by Herb Gardner. She proved herself filming „It Happened One Christmas“, „Consenting Adult“and „Nobody’s child“ in 1980s.

With the last named film she won an Emmy award  in 1986. She also returned to Broadway plays and got excellent critics for them.  She stayed active in TV series, performing in „Law & Order“ .

In the 90s she was often a guest star on popular TV series such as : „Roseanne“, „Frasier“ and „Ugly Betty“.
She received four Emmy awards and one Gold Globe award.

She wrote six bestsellers : „Free to Be You and Me“, „The Right Words at the Right Time“, „Growing up Laughing“ and more.

She married a TV host Phil Donahue in 1980. and they adopted five children together.
