Sally Margaret Field is an American TV and film actress.

Early life

Sally was born in Pasadena in 1946.

Her parents got divorced when she was four years old and her mother ,who was also an actress, married her stepfather Jack Mahoney. Sally who already had a brother got a halfsister in this second marriage.

She attended  Van Nyus High School where she focused on her extracurriculus school activities.

One of the reasons for her cheerleading and joining the drama section was her very strict father who often argued with her mother so she found a way to escape from that insecure environment.

Career development

After finishing highschool she joined an acting workshop at Columbia Studios.That helped launched her career by getting a leading role in a TV serie  „Gidget“ in 1965.

She soon became very popular and went to another hit serial called „The Flying Nun“.

Field wasn’t that happy with this role because she thought it wasn’ t serious enough.

In that period she was introduced to Lee Strasberg, an acting teacher, who encouraged her to move away from her known TV image of a good girl.

In 1975. she divorced her husband and a year after gain her first „ different“ role in Arnold Schwartzenegger’s „ Stay Hungry“.

The same year she acted in a TV movie „Sybil“ and with that part she won her first Emmy.

She appeared in „Smokey and the Bandit“ in 1977. costarring Burt Reynolds with whom she started a relationship.

In 1979. she won her first Oscar for Best Actress in a film „Norma Rae“.

After that she acted in a lot of movies , especially dramas and comedies.

Her second Oscar came with a movie“ Places in the Heart“ in 1984.

In the 1990s she started taking more character roles, for example in“Mrs.Doubtfire“ and in „Forrest Gump“.

She started producing TV series, directing them  and writing the screenplays.

Her greatest TV success was a family drama „ Brothers and Sisters“ and for the role in that serial she got another Emmy Award.

After that she starred in  „Spiderman“,“ Lincoln“, in a comedy“ Hello, My Name is Doris“ and a lot more.

Philantropic work

She worked with young actors in the Sundance Institute summer programms.

She became a spokeperson for a pharmaceutical company after she found out she has osteoporosis.

She protested alongside  many known fellow actresses urging the Mexican government to re-investigate murders  of hundreds of women in a city Ciudad Juarez, on the Mexico-Texas border in 2004.

Field received a 2012 Human Rights Campaign Ally for Equality award for her fight for gay rights.The person who gave her the award was her youngest son, Sam Greisman, who is gay.

Personal life 

In 1968. she got married to Steven Craig and had her first child.

In 1972. she was pregnant with her second baby but soon after she started acting in a sitcom and after that she divorced Steven in 1975.

Her second marriage was with the producer Alan Griesman in which she got her third son.

She lives a peaceful life devoted to her three children and grandchildren like in the roles she played in.
