His parents were Leo Penn who was an actor and director and Eileen Ryan who was an actress. He is their second son. Penn’s elder brother Micheal Penn was a Musician.
His younger brother was the actor, Chris Penn. He married to Robin Wright from 1990 to 2010 and Madonna from 1985 to 1989. He has two children Dylan Frances Penn and Hooper Jack Penn.
Sean attended Santa Monica High School along with Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, and Rob Lowe. He moved to New York at the age of 19 and became a part of the Broadway Play, Heartland.
Sean Penn was also an active social activist. He was noted for his criticism against the administration of George W Bush and his contacts with the presidents of Cuba and Venezuela.
He made his debut by enacting in the Little House, which was a series in the Prairie television. His debut film was Taps in 1981, in which he played a role of military cadet.

Other films under her direction were The Crossing Guard in 1995, The Pledge in 2001, and Into the Wild in 2007.
Penn was nominated for Academy Awards for the Best Actor 5 times and he won the award twice. Those two movies were Dead Man Walking and Sweet and Lowdown.
