Early years
Maurice Richards was born on September 2, 1983 in Mobile in the state of Alabama in United States.
After finishing high school he enrolled the Tuskagee University where he was going to finish the studies to become a mechanical engineer. He had a talent in that area so he wanted to make a career out of it. He liked his studies and thought that he will actually finish them, but as it turns out, music got in the way.
After a while, he decided to quit the studies and start pursuing his rapping career. Although he was very interested in engineering, he thought he was better in making beats and rapping and he thought he would feel better in this area. He signed a contract with a record label called Zone 4. That meant that he should start to work on his first album. This was a huge thing for him and his career started out really well.
During that period he was featured on Ludacris’ compilations and as a guest star on Drake’s and Da Bottoms’ mixtapes. Since all of these artists are very popular, their fans got to know Rich Boy through these songs.
In 2007 he released his first album called simply “Rich Boy” and one of the songs on the album “Throw some D’s” became a huge hit which reached No.6 on the Billboard charts. Polow da Don produced most of the work and continued to be Rich Boy’s producer on other singles. Polow da Don was already a proven producer who produced hits for Ludacris, Fergie and Ciara.
In 2008 he was placed on the cover of the XXL magazine which selected him for the Freshmen list, because he was considered to be a star on the rise. This gained him a lot of popularity, especially on the social media.
“Top of the World” was the name of his single from 2009 which was placed on the soundtrack for “More Than a Game” movie. It was a short documentary about NBA, basketball and LeBron James.
After the starting success everything stopped seemed to stop for Rich Boy. He made songs but they just weren’t hits. People didn’t accept his songs in a way he thought they would and his fame started to stagnate.
He has left Zone 4 Interscope record label and changed it into E1 Music and it took a few years for him to release his album “Break the Pot”.
In 2011 he released a mixtape called “12 Diamonds” .This mixtape is on the trace of his great earlier work but enhanced by some new rythms.
This year he started to collaborate with Boombox Cartel, an EDM duo consisted of two guys: Americo and Jorge.
Some of his more successful mixtapes are: “Bigger Than The Mayor”, “Pacc Man” and “Bring It To The Block”.
In 2015 he released his third album named “Featuring”, released by his new partnered record label E1.
