Born on January 25, 1971 in Ethiopia, Marcus Samuelsson’s real name was Kassahun Tsegie.
He and his sister, Fantaye were later adopted by a homemaker and geologist Ann Marie and Lennart Samuelsson after their mother dies in an epidemic that hit Ethiopia.
That was when their names were changed. Marcus has an adopted sister named Anna Samuelsson.
Marcus’ interest in cooking started from his maternal grandmother from whom he learnt a lot of things and then later enrolled himself in Culinary Institute of Goteburg (Gothenburg).
He kept polishing his skills by travelling along and apprenticing in several parts of Switzerland and Austria before he came to United States in the year 1991 to work for the famous restaurant Aquavit.
Since his arrival in the United States, he has only moved forward in his career.
At the mere age of 24, he was appointed as the Executive chef in Aquavit and was soon designated as the youngest chef to have received a three-star review for his cooking from The New York Times.
In the year 2003, he was titled as the “Best Chef: New York City” by the James Beard Foundation which a really prestigious title.
In the same year of winning the title he started to run his second New York restaurant named Riingo which served the fusion between Japanese and American food.
He has also served as a guest chef for the very first state dinner for the American president, Barrack Obama.
He is even a visiting professor in the International Culinary Science at the Umea University.
