Steven Adam Markowitz who is popularly known by his stage name, Hoodie Allen is a famous American rapper.

He left behind his blossoming career in the Google to pursue his dreams in music and songwriting.

Early life

Hoodie Allen was born on August 19, 1988, in Long Island, New York. He belongs to a Jewish household and has a brother named Daniel. He attended the Long Island School for the Gifted and later changes schools to attend the Plainview – Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School. Allen had a very strong liking towards music and writing songs from a very young age and even rapped a number of popular songs to his own family and friends.

After graduating high school, Allen enrolled himself at the University of Pennsylvania and was part of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity. He later graduated University with a degree in finance and marketing and joined in the S.T.A.R.T programmed under Google. He was constantly writing songs and performing in the local concerts back then as well. In several of his interviews, he has stated that he always felt like he wasn’t completely himself and thus opted out of the job and started working on his music full-time.

Career

It was his official debut mixtape, All American that gained him a worldwide recognition and he hasn’t looked back since then.

Initially, Allen worked along with his best friend, Obey City (Samuel Obey) and released a few songs. Hoodie settled on his stage name because it was the same nickname that he grew up with and took the later part of the name from his favorite character Woody Allen. He said that he always wanted to have a name that would be funny yet stick on with people.

The first two songs that the duo released were the Bagels & Beats EP along with the Making Waves mixtapes. The song went on to receive a lot of recognition and even got nominated for the MTVU’s Best Music on Campus award in the year 2009. While the two of them worked together that year, Obey City later refused to invest any more money on Allen which is why he started working with RJ Ferguson. He later released the song “You are not a Robot” in June 2010 which hit the #1 spot on the Hype Machine.

Since the rising popularity of the songs that he released, Allen started working on his next mixtape and titled it as Pep Rally. Most of the songs were produced by RJF, and he even produced one of his own music videos.

Allen later released his third mixtape in July 2011, Leap year which went on to gain over 250,000 plays in Soundcloud. He even did a mini tour with his mixtapes around North America.

Allen finally released his debut album on April 10, 2012, and titled it as All American. In interviews, he claimed that he wanted his music to reflect the things that inspired him all along. The album went on to debut at #1 on the iTunes chart and even #10 on the Billboard Top 200. He later toured around 22 places in the US along with four other cities in the UK following his album release.

Following the worldwide success of his debut album, the fans got a sneak peek of one of the songs from the next mixtape of Allen. The song, Cake Boy, was then released on the iTunes, and then a week later, he released the music video for “Fame is for Assholes” featuring the famous rapper Chiddy Yang. He later went on to release his next singles titled, Make It Home, No Interruptions and a few more.

It was later on May 07, 2014 that his very first studio version of the song “Show Me What You’re Made Of” was released from his album, People Keep Talking. He later toured this album around US, Canada, Europe and even Australia to promote the album further.

Allen later released his second studio album, Happy Camper on January 22, 2016. He released a few singles from the album; the “Are You Having Any Fun?” is the most popular one.

Hoodie Allen and Taryn Elyssa Levenstein dated for around four years from 2011 till 2015 before they decided to go on separate paths.
