Diane Lane is an American actress.
Early life
Diane Lane was born on January 22, 1965, in New York .
Her mother was a nightclub singer and a Playboy’s Miss October 1957.
Her father was a drama coach and a cab driver.
When Diane was only 13 days old, her parents separated and her mother went to Mexico to get a divorce and gain custody of Diane until she was six years old.
Lane’s father received custody after that and they lived in residential hotels in New York City.
When Lane was 15, she left her father and went to Los Angeles with an actor and friend Christopher Atkins. She returned to New York and moved in with his family.
Later on she came back to live with her father and in 1981. she went back to high school after taking correspondence courses.
Career development
Diane was acting from a very young age and at the age of six she had her first theatre debut.
She was only 13 when she was cast by director George Roy Hill in his 1979 film „A Little Romance“.. After that she found herself on magazine covers, including “Time”, and everybody spoke of her as a new young acting sensation.
A famous film director Francis Ford Coppola casted her in two films based on S.E. Hinton novels: „The Rumble Fish“ and „The Outsiders“ , both in 1983.,have become classics.
Her next two movies weren’t well received. „Streets of Fire“ and „The Cotton Club“ with Richard Gere were considered failures.
She stayed away from the screen for the next three years because she was unhappy with herself. This two films, ironically, seemed to become more popular during this period then when they were released.
She came back to the screen in „The Big Town“ with Matt Dillon and Tommy Lee Jones in 1987.
In 1989’s huge hit TV series „Lonesome Dove“ Diane made another big impression on audience.
This film won her an Emmy nomination and much praise.
After that the roles kept coming:“ Descending Angel „, Richard Attenborough’s „Chaplin“ and Mike Binder’s“ Indian Summer“ .
She starred in Walter Hill’s „Wild Bill“ in 1995, the Sylvester Stallone action movie „Judge Dredd“ the same year, and many more.
Her next role in the independent hit“ A Walk on the Moon“ in 1999. gave her a spot amongst the stars.
A comedy „My Dog Skip“ one year later also became a small success.
However, her role in „The perfect Storm“ was the film that made her a huge star and gave her recognition she wanted.
It was followed by another great commercial hit „Unfaithful“ in 2002.in which she portrayed Richard Gere’s adulterous wife.
Her following films, including a blockbuster again, „Man of Steel“ were all well-received and her performances were praised more then ever.
After several hits, she went back to theatre, playing in a lot of off-Broadway shows.
Personal life
She was wed to actor Christopher Lambert, from 1988. to 1994.
They have a daughter Eleanor who was born in 1993.
Lane married another actor , Josh Brolin,in 2004.
But their marriage was filled with despute (Josh was even arrested for domestic battery) so they got divorced in 2013.
Philantropic work
Diane is involved in several charities.
The most important ones are The Heifer International, which focuses on world hunger and Artists for Peace and Justice, for supporting Haiti.
She is a well known fighter for women rights and against oppression.
