Early life

Dame Julia Elizabeth “Julie” Andrews was born on October 1, 1935 in Walton-on-Thames, England. She is the daughter of Barbara Ward Wells and unnamed family friend.

Her first stepfather was metalwork teacher Ted Wells and latter was Ted  Andrews. Julia reported that her second stepfather was violent and alcoholic, even tried to sleep with her.

However, he paid her lessons in Arts Educational Schools in London, where her mentor was Lilian Stiles-Allen. Julia claims that she has a huge impact on her, assigning Lilian as a third mother.

Personal life

Julia is a widow. She was married twice.

Her first marriage was with designer Tony Walton and they divorced in 1967.

The second time Julia married with American director and producer Blake Edwards. They were together until his death in 2010.

They adopted two daughters Amy and Joanna. Today, Julia has 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Acting & Singer Career

The encounter with a British TV director Val Parnell was crucial for Julie start of the career. Her first professional performance was in the London Hippodrome, where she sang the aria ” Je Suis Titania” in 1947.

At 13 years she performed along with Danny Kaye in a Royal Command Variety Performance. Finally, Julia’s tv debut was on the BBC  RadiOlympia Showtime. In theater London casino she took the lead role in a folk tale Cinderella.

In 1954 Julie has Broadway debut in the musical The Boy Friend, where she played Polly Browne. Julie got great critics for that performance.

At the instigation of composer Richard Rodgers, she took the role in musical My Fair Lady. Thanks to this role and the incredible talent that she showed, she is assigned for the musical Cinderella. Julie was nominated for Emmy Awards for Cinderella’s role.

Her first solo album was released in 1957 under the name The Lass with the Delicate Air, containing the folk and patriotic songs.

During the late 50s and beginning of 60s, she appeared in various shows such as The Ed Sullivan Show, The Dinah Shore Chevy Show, The Jack Benny Program, The Garry Moore Show and so on.

Playing in the box office hit musical comedy Mary Poppins bring her wide popularity and numerous awards. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress and GGA for Best Actress. Also, she won along with film partners Grammy Award for Best Album for Children.

Between the 60s and the 80s Julie played in numerous shows establishing cooperation with ABC network. Another GGA Award for Best Actress she won for the dual role in the film Victor Victoria.

After receiving lifetime Achievement Award at the Screen Actors Guild’s awards, she published her autobiography Home: A Memoir of My Early Years.
