Gordon’s mother, Helen and his younger sister Yvonne have been nurses and his father Gordon James Senior died in 1997 and worked as a pool manager and shopkeeper.

Ramsay’s childhood wasn’t a happy one. In his autobiography, Humble Pie, he wrote that his family moved a lot from one place to another due to his father’s failed jobs offers. His father was an alcoholic and a womanizer, who was often violent to him and the rest of the family.

At the age of sixteen, Ramsay moved out of his family home and moved into a flat in Banbury in Oxfordshire.

Football aspirations

At an early age, Ramsay tried to build his football career. When he was only twelve, he was chosen to play for Warwickshire. However, he had no luck with his football career because he often got injured and had to pause his playing.

In his autobiography he claims that, in the 1984, he even got a trial with the Rangers and was signed by the club when he was only fifteen. It was later discovered that he wasn’t on the first team and that he only trained with them for a while and that he left after his knee injury.

Cooking career

After he failed to pursue his football career, Ramsay decided to dedicate his time to build his cooking education. He attended the North Oxfordshire Technical College to study hotel management. His decision came more as an accident than a life choice.

Ramsay worked in restaurants around the town, and he seemed to be doing well managing larger kitchens and restaurant staff. He knew that the only way to progress further in his career is to study French cuisine. He worked in Le Gavroche in Mayfair where he met Jean-Claude Breton who offered Ramsay to work with him in a ski resort in French Alps as his helping hand.

After three years, Gordon had to leave his position due to high stress and mental pressure the job entitled, and decided to work on a private yacht Idlewild in Bermuda.

After his return to London in 1993, Ramsay was offered a position of head-chef at La Tante Claire in Chelsea. After few successful years in Chelsea, Ramsay finally had the chance to open his own restaurant. The restaurant was opened in 1998 with help of his father-in-law Chris Hutcheson. In 2010 his father in law resigned from the position of company’s CEO.

The restaurant won its third Michelin star in 2001, and after that he opened three more restaurants, PEtrus, Amaryllis and Claridge’s. since then, Ramsay has opened restaurants in Dubai, Tokyo, New York City, Ireland and Montreal.

Business interests

All of his restaurants and other business properties are held by his company Gordon Ramsay Holdings Limited. Ramsay shares this company with his Father-in-law, and the company was valued to around 67$ million in 2007.

Some of his restaurants around the world have suffered a loss of popularity by the customers, but nevertheless this hasn’t affected Ramsay’s income a whole lot.
