Matt Lucas is a known English comedian, actor and a singer, who became popular after his great performances in a TV show called “Little Britain” and in “Alice in Wonderland” adaptation.

Early years

He was born as Matthew Richard Lucas on March 5, 1974 in a part of London called Paddington.

His parents Diana and John worked hard to bring up their family. John had a challenging chauffeuring business. His father died in his fifthies of a heart attack.

Matt comes from a Jewish family. It was found out that his grandparents came to England while running away from the WWII.

They came from Germany a few months before the war and by doing that they avoided holokaust.

Lucas lost all his hair as a very young boy due to alopecia.

He way a pupil at Aylward Primary School after which he joined The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School.

Interestingly enough, it was thr same school where David Baddiel and Sacha Baron Cohen went.

After graduating from high school he enrolled the University of Bristol. He studied there in a period from 1993 to 1995.

He was interested in acting from an early age. This led him to got involved in the work of National Youth Theatre, where he  David Walliams. The two of them continued their collaboration later on.

Career development

In 1992, Matt started working with comedians Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer.

In 1995, he was chosen for a role in  “Shooting Stars”. This was a comedy TV show aired on BBC and led by Reeves and Mortimer.

Matt starred as George Dawes, who was a fiction character made to look as a giant baby, who would play drumms dresses in his pyjamas.

Other than the baby role, he also played George’s mother.

In 1999, Lucas and his new partner David Walliams, created “Rock Profile”, a popular comedy show connected to famous musicians.

At this period, he has already written comedy texts for other actors, majority for Sacha Baron Cohen.

Matt appeared in music videos for Blur, Ben Folds, Pet Shop Boys and Fat Les.

His first role in a musical was in 2002, when he starred in “Taboo at The Venue”, a musical produced by Boy George.

His most successfull show in a financial way was “Little Britain”. It started as a TV show but became a TV series.

This was the biggest success for him and his partner David Walliams. They both write and act in this show.

Their popularity was confirmed in 2005 when they were proclaimed as the most powerful people in TV comedy.

In 2005, he managed to get a role out of the comedy genre: in a BBC series titled “Casanova”.

After that, he accepted an offer to work on ITV, in their children programme show named “King Arthur’s Disasters”.

One year later, in 2006, he became “Digital Al”, a radio and TV face of a campaign focused on rising public’s knowledge about transferring on “digital”.

He had a small cameo role in “Shaun of the Dead”, a fantasy film from 2004.

In 2007, he has released a charity single titled “I’m Gonna Be”. He did it for “Comic Relief”, one of the biggest charities in UK.

He had a role in “The Wind in the Willows”, another TV adaptation in 2006.

Matt Lucas starred alongside David  Walliams in “Little Britain” series made for HBO and the American market.

In 2008, he appeared in a season of “Big Brother Celebrity Hijack”.

In 2009, he started working on the “Flaming Sword of Fire”, a big comedy series which later premièred on Comedy Central.

In 2010, he played as the character of  Tweedledee and Tweedledum in a movie called “Alice in Wonderland” and directed by Tim Burton.

In 2010, he became a host of a radio show called ” And The Winner Is”.

Matt got the role of Thénardier in “Les Misérables”, a musical concert in London.

He made a duet with Alfie Boe named “The Impossible Dream” which was released on Alfie’s first album.

In 2011, Matt gave his voice to a character in “Gnomeo and Juliet” movie.

He also had a tiny role in a romantic comedy “Bridesmaids”.

On Christmas 2010, he started filming his new series called “Come Fly with Me” which was produced and aired by BBC. It was starred both by David Walliams and him. The show is based on airline industry.

In 2012, he worked on a series called Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation and then later made the famous The Matt Lucas Awards. This was pretty important to him because it was finally a show, hosted by BBC, where he was in the center of the attention.

He starred in the comedy Small Apartments and in 2014 he was in The Life of Rock with Brian Pern. He later published a series called Pompidou for BBC.

In 2016, he got a famous role of Tweedledee/Tweedledum in Alice Through the Looking Glass made by Tim Burton, one of the world’s most famous scenarists and producers.

He was also in Doctor Who’s tenth season and in 2017, he got the a very important recognition called Honorary Degree “Doctor of Letters”. It was given to him by the University of Bristol and he had studied there for two years.

Later in 2017, he focused more on writing his book called Little Me and it was published in October 2017, the paperback edition being let to people in June of 2018.

Personal life

He is very involved in charity, epscially a UK charity for leukaemia patients. He is great support to both the patients and the parents and he is a great person, as everyone who works with him has said.

He won 60 000 pounds for the charity in a show called Celebrity Who Wants to Be a Millionare.

He is homosexual and this was no surprise to anyone around him. He himself started to notice it when he was 7. He entered partnertship with Kevin McGee and many famous celebrities attended this wedding. It was later dissolved in 2008 sadly.

Lucas describes himself as an atheist and he claims that he maybe has some Jew intentions because of his further family, but he isn’t really much of a believer.

During 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, he had lived with Rebel Wilson in West Hollywood. Both od them are known as very funny and interesting people and therefore they had great fun together.

Lucas likes Arsenal, a football club, and often makes jokes about how people think he can’t be into sports because he is homosexual
