Brian Conley, born as Brian Paul Conley is a British comedian, host, actor, and singer. Although he excels in every field, Conley is most famous as a comedian. His most famous encounter was ‘The Brian Conley Show.’

He has featured in many television sitcoms and musicals. Brian has recorded three albums as of now. Brian has won a number of awards such as the National Television Awards, Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards and the TMA Best Performance in a Musical Award.

Early Life

Brian Conley was born on 7 August 1961 in Paddington, London. Not much information is available about his parents except that his father drove a taxi for a living and the family’s financial condition was not good.

Conley went to Barbara Speake Stage School and studied performing arts there.

Brian started getting offers for minor roles in his teenage years itself. He appeared in an advertisement of Hot Dog and also in an episode of the science series Survivors.

Career

Conley’s first ever major breakthrough was in a comedy show band called Tomfoolery.

The band performed across Wales and England in various pubs & clubs. They also performed for artists like The Nolans and Johnny Mathis as a support act.

Conley was spotted by Bob Voice while working for the band. After the band broke up in 1980, Conley worked as a warm-up man for several T.V. personalities.

Conley’s actual career was given a boost by casting director of TVS Bill Battery, who made him appear in popular comedy shows like Make Me Laugh, Five Alien, Life From Her Majesty’s and The Laughter Show, in between 1982-1987.

In 1989, Conley gained the support of London Weekend Television (LWT’S) light entertainment ci tried and started Brian Conley This Way Up, like a comedy sketch show.

Conley first starred in the West End, in a production of My Girl as the lead cast, Bill Sunibson. This happened after two series of his show were aired.

Conley came up with The Brian Conley Show, his own comedy programme in 1992. This time also it was the LWT that supported him.

Director and Producer Nigel Lythgoe suggested Brian for not limiting the content of the show to sketches only, and that to make it varied. Listening to Nigel’s advice came as a blessing for Conley as the show became immensely popular this time and was titled Britain’s most-watched light entertainment programme.

After the success of his show, Conley was cast in the sitcom named Time after Time. He bagged the lead role in the show. This was also a huge success and was rewarded Best ITV Sitcom at the British Comedy Award in 1994.

Brian was then seen in The Grimleys as Dough ‘Dynamo’ Digby opposite Nigel Planer, Most Holder, and Amanda Holden. Similar to few of his earlier projects, this show was also immensely popular, especially Brian’s character.

Conley again appeared in a show named The Brian Conley Show. The show aired on ITV and was a music and chat show. Some Hollywood names like Leslie Nielsen and Kathleen Turner  appeared as guests on the show. The show had three series in total.

Brian is also a known face in theatre. His appearance as Button, in Cinderella, was much appreciated and he has reprised the role many times.

Some of his other stage works include Robinson Crusoe as Robinson Crusoe, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as Caractacus Potts and Hairspray as Edna Turnblad.

Conley made a comeback on the television with a daytime show titled Let Me Entertain You, which was a Lion Production for BBC Two. Brian also appeared on The New Paul O’Grady Show as a guest presenter later that year.

In 2007, Conley came back with the second series of Let Me Entertain You and also presented a game show for BBC, named Dirty Rotten Cheaters.

In 2012, for a change Brian was seen as a contestant and not as a host in I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here. Unfortunately, he had to leave the show midway due to medical issues.

Conley hosted a game show called Timeline for the T.V. channel Challenge in 2014. In 2015 and 2016, Brian presented The T.V. That Made Me, a daytime BBC show.

In 2017, Conley appeared in Strictly Come Dancing with partner Amy Dieren. The show is still on the air.
