An American by origin, Derek Hough masters in Ballroom and Latin dance forms. He is a choreographer, actor, musician, director, singer, and songwriter. Her mother introduced his fine arts, and Derek had athletic abilities from a very young age. He chose dancing when he was a kid and learned dancing under renowned dance teachers Shirley and Corky Ballas. Derek Hough gained popularity in mass media when he appeared in ABC network’s reality dance show ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ A six-time winner, Derek has been a part of the show for many seasons.

Later, he traveled across the globe for he was a professional dancer and performed in countries such as Netherlands, Japan, Czechoslovakia, Ireland, and Poland. Derek also appeared on ‘Burnt the Floor,’ ‘Footloose: The Musical’ and other different theatre productions. Apart from dancing shows, he has also been a part of various feature movies and T.V. series. He won the prestigious Primetime Emmy Award twice for his dance performance and choreography in the year 2013 and 2015 respectively. Besides dancing, he also excels in playing guitar, piano, and drums.

Early Life

He was on May 17th, 1985, in the Utah region of the Salt Lake City and was the fourth in number amongst the siblings to dancers Bruce Hough and Marianne. His father served as the chairman of the Utah Republican Party twice. He also has four sisters named Katherine, Sharee, Marabeth, and Julianne. Her sister Julianne also pursues a promising career in dancing and choreography. Derek took a keen interest in acrobatics, karate and sports like basketball & football during his childhood.

His parents took a separation when he was just 12 years old, which resulted in his departure to London, where he took classes from ballroom dancers Corky Ballas and Shirley Ballas. Derek lived in London for ten years where he trained in theatre, song and other dance forms like ballet, tap, and jazz along with gymnastics from the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. He and his sister Julianne accompanied by his tutor’s son Mark Ballas started a pop music group named 2B1G (Two Boys, One Girl), and actively took part in dance oppositions in America and the Great Britain.

Career

From a very young age, Derek started participating in various competitions which made him travel many foreign destinations. He was the winner of WSDF World Youth Latin Champion in 2002, and bagged U-21 Latin title with his dance partner Aneta Piotrowska for Poland in 2003, at the Blackpool Dance Festival

Hough had a small cameo in ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’ in 2001. He got the lead role in ‘Footloose: The Musical’ in 2006, which was played at Novello Theatre in London’s West End, and in the 2006 UK National Tour. Hough got nominated for Whatsonstage.com Theatregoer’s Choice Awards for his brilliant performance in West End.

Derek was introduced in the group of panelists on BBC One’s reality T.V. show ‘DanceX’ in 2007. In the same year, he also appeared in ‘Dancing With The Stars’ but as a guest instructor. Later that year, he was made the partner of Jennie Garth in the same show, and they fought till the semi-finals of that season.

Hough appeared consecutively in the next many seasons of ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ In 2008, he was paired up with model Brooke Burke, and they won the show that season and were also awarded the Mirror Ball Trophy. In the next season, he was the partner of rapper Lil’ Kim and after that of Joanna Krupa when they managed to survive only till the semi-final. In 2010 Derek was paired up with singer Nicole Scherzinger, and they ended up as the winner of the show.

Derek was a regular face on the show except for season 12 and 22. Some of his other partners in the show were celebrities like gymnast Nastia Liukin, wildlife conservationist Bindi Irwin, Paralympic snowboarder Amy Purdy, T.V. personality Maria Menounos and YouTube personality Bethany Mota.

In 2010, Hough did his Broadway debut in ‘Burn the Floor’ and the following year in 2011, he made his debut in feature films with the movie ‘Make Your Move’ which premiered quite late in 2014, due to some issues.

Derek announced that he has associated with world champion Ice Dancers Charlie White and Meryl Davis for their short dance program in the upcoming 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, on April 18, 2013. Charlie and Meryl won a gold medal for the same. Derek also won the Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding choreography in 2013. He won the award for his work in ‘Hey Pachuco/Para Los Rumberos/Walking on Air.’

Hough directed a music video ‘Get My Name’ for Mark Ballas in 2014. In the same year, he won three awards, Young Hollywood Awards for ‘Hottest Body’ of the year, GLSEN Inspiration Award and the Kaleidoscope Award which he won with his sister Julianne Hough and was given by the UCLA. Derek published his first book ‘Taking the Lead: Lessons from a Life in Motion’ also in 2014, and the book is on ‘The New York Times Best Seller’ list.

In 2015, also Derek won a no’ of awards like the  Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Choreography and  The Industry Dance Awards for America’s Favorite TV/Film Performance and the  World Choreography Awards for ‘Television Live Performance. He also won a no. of awards, for “Elastic Heart.”

In 2016, Hough was honored with the Inspiration Award at The Dizzy Feet Foundation’s Celebration of Dance Gala along with his sister. He also won the Favorite Dance Idol award in the Industry Dance Awards. Derek appeared as a guest star in the television series ‘Jane the Virgin.’ He also appeared in the musical ‘Hairspray’ as Corny Collins, which was broadcasted live on NBC.  He choreographed a music video ‘The Arena’ for Lindsey Stirling and also appeared in it. Derek was chosen to play the lead role in ‘Singin’ in the Rain,’ a Broadway production which premiered in 2017.

In 2017, Hough came along with Michael Bublé for directing and choreographing a video of Michael’s song named ‘I Believe in you.’ Hough also starred in it.

Derek had a strong relationship with India de Beaufort who is a British singer, songwriter, and actress. They dated for 8 years from 2000 to 2008.

After breaking up with India de Beaufort, Hough started dating former model and actress Shannon Elizabeth. This relationship lasted for only a year. In 2010, Derek started dating Cheryl. This also lasted for a year. Next, Hough had an affair with Lauren Conrad in 2011. After this, Hough dated actress Nina Dobrev in 2013.  Then Derek was rumored to have an affair with Nikki Reed. At present, oi it has been a rumor that he is dating Kate Hudson, but nothing can be said surely.
