Early life 

Thomas DeCario Callaway was born in a place called Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America. Thomas DeCario Callaway graduated from high school in Georgia called Riverside Military Academy which was a boarding school for all the boys who undergo military training. Thomas DeCario Callaway started his career as a musician in the church since both his parents were ordained ministers. Thomas DeCario Callaway lost his father at a very early age of two and was raised by his mother Sheila J. Tyler- Callaway. His mother was a firefighter. Thomas DeCario Callaway lost his mother at the age of 18, two years after his mother got into an accident and became paralyzed. Thomas DeCario Callaway had already started working in the music world when his mother died, and his career was just taking off when his mother died.

After the death of Thomas DeCario Callaway’s mother, he sank into depression. Thomas DeCario Callaway has expressed his depression and how he overcame it in his song called ‘Free’ by Goodie Mob and also by ‘Just a Thought’ on his album St. Elsewhere. Thomas DeCario Callaway has been seen writing about his mother in songs like Guess Who which was from the album Soul Food. A documentary was made about the life of Thomas DeCario Callaway which was produced by The Fader and Absolut where he explained how he got depressed after his mother’s death and how everything changed in his career after that. 

Career 

Thomas DeCario Callaway was the original member of the hip-hop group from Atlanta called Goodie Mob. There were four members of the group where he was the youngest. Goodie Mob as a group released their first album in the year of 1995 and named the album Soul Food. The album was loved by all the fans, and soon they became famous in the southern rap scene. The Goodie Mob came up with their second album in the year of 1998 and named it Still Standing. Though this album was not a commercial hit, it was well received by the critics and the fans. Thomas DeCario Callaway took more responsibility in their group, and in 1999 The Goodie Mob came up with their third album and named it World Party.

After the third album release, Thomas DeCario Callaway left the Goodie Mob and went on to start a career as a solo artist. When he left the group, Goodie Mob the remaining artists stayed together and kept on performing under the label of Koch Records. Thomas DeCario Callaway collaborated with Goodie Mob in the album named Even in Darkness in the Dungeon Family. The song called ‘Hold On’ from the album Big Boi of OutKast’s Got Purp? Vol 2 was the first song after the split that the Goodie Mob and Thomas DeCario Callaway worked together. Thomas DeCario Callaway was amongst the ten lucky artists who were a part of the Santana album named Supernaturals. In the album Thomas DeCario Callaway sand a song called ‘Do You Like the Way’ with Lauryn Hill who also wrote the song.

Thomas DeCario Callaway left Arista after he dropped two albums because the sales of the records were very low. He released his first album called ‘Cee-Lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections.’ The album got released in the year 2002 but was not able to do a lot of business. Thomas DeCario Callaway released his second album in the year of 2004 which brought rap music to a whole new level. The album has artists featured Ludacris and Pharrell Williams. The album went as high as number two on the Billboard charts at the time of its release.

Thomas DeCario Callaway met DJ Danger Mouse at an event in the University of Georgia and became friends with him. Thomas DeCario Callaway and DJ Danger Mouse then started their duo and named it Gnarls Barkley. The first album by the Gnarls Barkley was a collaborative album called St. Elsewhere which was released on the 24th of April 2006. The album hit the United States chart at the number 1 position and was a huge commercial hit. The album sold extensively in bot United States of America and United Kingdom. The song ‘Crazy’ from the album reached the number one position in the charts, and it was also announced by Rolling Stone that the song ‘Crazy’ was the greatest song of that decade. This was the most successful album in the career of Thomas DeCario Callaway. Thomas DeCario Callaway released his second album as Gnarls Barkley with his friend DJ Danger Mouse and named it ‘The Odd Couple’ and released it in the year 2008. The first single of this album released early and was called ‘Run (I’m a Natural Disaster).’

In the year of 2010, Thomas DeCario Callaway released his singles ‘Fuck You’ in the YouTube platform and soon it became a viral hit. ‘Fuck you’ also took the number 1 position in the charts at the time of its release.

Thomas DeCario Callaway was married to a woman named Christian Johnson, and then they later got divorced in 2005.
