Dej Loaf was born on April 8, 1991, in the eastern part of Detroit, Michigan where she was born and brought up. While she stayed with her parents and grandparents prior to the incident, following that she started becoming a lot quiet and mostly kept to herself. It was her own family who introduced her to music that she grew up listening to, mainly 2Pac, Miles Davis, and Rakim. She was a very bright student in her school and loved music and found recluse in it. She started writing her own songs just at a tender age of 9.

Dej did her schooling from South-Eastern High School in Detroit from where she graduated in the year 2009 and was even part of the junior varsity team because she loved playing basketball.

After graduating high school, she enrolled herself in the Saginaw Valley State University where she got admitted to the nursing course but soon dropped out because she wanted to pursue music full time. she studied for three semesters and later dropped out of college.

Following her decision of making and focusing on music full time, she wanted to opt for a name that would sound more appealing to the masses and would be easy to remember. It was then that she gave herself the stage name “Dej Loaf,” the first part being a part of her actual name and the Loaf being short for Loafers. She didn’t have it easy from the beginning and had to struggle to gain that recognition that she has today. She was very reluctant after her initial failures but didn’t let it bring her down. She continuously kept knocking on the doors of the people whom she thought would be helpful for her career.

It was finally in 2013 that she released her very first mixtape, “Just Do It” which gained a lot of attention from people across America. Many of her songs from the mixtape went viral which was definitely a blessing because that is exactly how another rapper from Detroit, SAYITAINTTONE found her songs and grabbed his attention because of the unique lyrics and melody. He soon offered her a record deal under his own record, IBGN in the same year.

Dej later recorded and released a song in 2014 titled “Try Me” which soon was perceived so well by the masses all across America and the song went viral and became a lot popular in just a week. That grabbed a lot of attention, and soon the song’s sales skyrocketed, and the song charted in the United States music charts.

Following the release and rapid popularity of her first single in 2014, it was one of the most popular record labels in America, the Columbia Records that approached her with a record deal and wanted to sign her. She didn’t even blink and simply signed the deal and started recording. Soon after that, she released her second mixtape. While she has some time in between, her stardom picked up the pace, and she featured in one of the songs in Eminem’s album which was titled ShadyXV. The song she featured in was Detroit vs. Everybody. The song made it to #28 on the R&B chart and #23 in the US Rap Chart which was yet another boost to her rapidly growing fame and recognition.

She, later on, became the opening act for Nicki Minaj’s tour “The Pinkprint Tour” which gave her career a rapid momentum for the upcoming EP and album that she was about to release.
